Breakaway Apparel Pty. Ltd. is the wholesaler and retailer of the women’s wear labels Black Pepper, Extra Pepper, Equus, Yvonne Black and the menswear label Breakaway. We design in-house, and manage production, distribution, marketing and sales from Melbourne to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The brands develop and source quality fabrics from around the world to create unique quality garments.
Whilst the company utilises hi-tech equipment and is constantly looking for the latest edge we have remained faithful and unchanged in our focus on our customers. This focus has helped us to earn the reputation as a leading leisurewear manufacturer in Australia. To maintain its reputation Breakaway invests significant time and money on both consumer research and product development. This assists with creating ranges each season that exceed the previous and which our customers look forward to buying.
OUR COMPANY HISTORY
Breakaway Apparel Pty. Ltd. was founded in Melbourne in 1976 by Gordon Black. Gordon was and still is a fanatical Rugby follower. He played first grade Rugby Union playing against the likes of South Africa and the All Blacks. He played in the Breakaway position and hence the company name.
In the beginning the majority of staff were actively involved or had a past background in Rugby. Over the years Breakaway has sponsored numerous Fun Runs including its own Breakaway Fun Run, and we have been involved with the sponsoring of yachts, participating in major nautical races. In more recent years we have been involved with a selection of Golf and Bowling Clubs. For a short period we even sponsored the Australian Bowls Team. Breakaway has always had an ongoing commitment to promote an active lifestyle.
Breakaway was a brand inspired by the legacy of ‘adidas’ and the trend to wear sportswear as casual wear away from the sporting grounds. Over the past 35 years as the casual market has developed, our product offer has evolved from a typical sports inspired look to a coordinated casual lifestyle look. Throughout this evolution we have stayed true to our calling to offer a co-ordinated collection of quality, easy care, mix and match items.
Breakaway started as a one man band supplying a few local stores, but quickly gained access to national retailers such as Myer (since 1984) and David Jones (since 1987). It opened its first own retail store in New Zealand in 1993. We now supply through a network of agents to over 1,000 retailers in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa and have a team of over 200 staff who all share the same clothing passion.
In 2004 the Breakaway business began trading under the umbrella of The PAS Group. To be able to handle the increased consumer demands for our brands Breakaway moved into a state of the art purpose built Head Office in Mt Waverley (Victoria) along with other businesses of The PAS Group in 2010.
Breakaway Apparel’s vision is to be an international Australian based clothing company of world class standard, with a reputation for high market responsiveness and flexibility.
Breakaway strives to be the leading expert in the fashion industry by offering our customers good value brands to suit their lifestyle. The operational philosophy is to have a constant focus on the creation of quality merchandise that is easy care and both smart and comfortable to wear placing a strong focus on marketing our brands, creative design and pioneering technology.
Our strategy is to be reached through investment in our team members and support their development. Everyone is committed to high, consistent quality in each aspect of Breakaway’s operation. The people at Breakaway are dedicated to anticipating the needs of our customer and the creation of product that offers a strong value proposition of quality merchandise.
